When creation dissolved into endless water, sage Markandeya wandered alone until he saw an impossible sight: a radiant infant resting on a single banyan leaf, calmly breathing while the universe disappeared.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Markandeya had practised devotion and austerity for ages. Pleased with him, Nara-Narayana offered a boon. The sage asked to witness the Lord\u2019s mysterious power of maya\u2014the power by which the eternal appears as a changing world.<\/p>\n

One evening, wind tore through his hermitage. Clouds swallowed the sky and rain became a wall. Oceans rose over continents; stars vanished. Markandeya was swept into a boundless flood.<\/p>\n

For what seemed like countless years he drifted through darkness, battered by waves, hunger, fear, and enormous creatures. Everything by which he measured life\u2014land, direction, time, companionship\u2014was gone.<\/p>\n

The Leaf That Held Infinity<\/h2>\n

Then he saw a small banyan tree rising from the water. On one green leaf lay a beautiful dark-blue infant, glowing with gentle light. The child placed His lotus-like foot near His mouth and smiled.<\/p>\n

Drawn closer, Markandeya was carried into the infant with a breath. Inside, he saw the entire universe: mountains, rivers, cities, stars, living beings\u2014even his own hermitage. With the next breath he was outside again, facing the child upon the leaf.<\/p>\n

He rushed forward to embrace Him. In that instant the child, the tree, and the flood disappeared. Markandeya sat once more beside his hermitage in the quiet evening.<\/p>\n

What seems large enough to contain us is itself held, effortlessly, within the One we cannot contain.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Wonder as Wisdom<\/h2>\n

Markandeya did not receive a neat explanation of maya. He received an experience that broke the scale of ordinary thought. The world is real as divine manifestation yet unstable as a wave. The Lord within it is also beyond it\u2014small enough to appear as an infant, infinite enough to contain every galaxy in a breath.<\/p>\n
