Pingala spent an entire night waiting for someone to buy her company. When no one came, disappointment became her unexpected teacher\u2014and hope placed in the wrong door finally released its hold.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In the city of Videha, Pingala dressed carefully and stood outside her home. She watched each prosperous man who passed, calculating what he might pay. One prospect went by, then another. She returned inside, came out again, and kept waiting.<\/p>\n

The night deepened. Every footstep raised hope; every disappearing figure dropped it into frustration. Her body tired, but expectation would not let her rest.<\/p>\n

The Turn Within<\/h2>\n

At last, despair broke the pattern. Pingala saw that no passer-by had bound her to the doorway. Her own craving had done it. She had ignored the indwelling Lord\u2014the constant friend of every heart\u2014while begging temporary people to promise lasting satisfaction.<\/p>\n

She did not blame the city. She called her disappointment a blessing because it exposed the bargain that had kept her restless. Desire says, \u201cPerhaps the next person, payment, or pleasure will complete me.\u201d Renunciation begins when we see the cost of endlessly saying \u201cnext.\u201d<\/p>\n

Pingala turned away from the street, lay down, and slept peacefully. Nothing outside had improved. No wealth arrived. The change was that expectation no longer stood guard over her mind.<\/p>\n

Disappointment can be the door through which false hope leaves and a deeper hope enters.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

What Freedom Felt Like<\/h2>\n

The Bh\u0101gavatam includes Pingala among the teachers of an avadhuta because wisdom can emerge in any life. Her awakening does not depend on social respectability; it begins with honest self-seeing. We suffer not only from what we lack, but from the promise we force it to make.<\/p>\n

This does not teach indifference to healthy goals or relationships. It warns against asking a finite thing to provide an infinite home. When desire stops appointing every passing opportunity as saviour, gratitude and devotion can finally breathe.<\/p>\n
