Once, the mighty demon king, Bali, had gained immense power and had become a threat to the gods and the divine order. To curb his growing influence, Lord Vishnu decided to take on the form of a dwarf Brahmin boy named Vamana.
Dressed as a humble ascetic, Vamana approached King Bali, who was known for his generous nature. Vamana expressed his desire to receive a small piece of land as a donation, equivalent to the space he could cover in three steps. Intrigued by the young Brahmin’s request, Bali agreed.
To the astonishment of everyone present, Vamana began to grow in size. With his first step, he covered the entire Earth. With his second step, he encompassed the heavens. Realizing the divine nature of Vamana, Bali humbly offered his head for Vamana’s third step.
Vamana, pleased with Bali’s humility and devotion, placed his foot on Bali’s head and pushed him into the netherworld. In doing so, Vamana restored balance and dharma (righteousness) in the universe.
